Back In Time ... 1899 100 Years Ago 1999
Obituary: On Monday, July 17th Mr. Maynard A. VanGuysling died at his residence, 280 Clinton Ave., Albany, N. Y. aged thirty years. On the 15th inst., Mr. VanGuyserling was attacked with cholera morbus and apparently improved daily, although remaining weak, and on the 22nd inst., returned to his duties. He walked home at night feeling fairly well. He became worse and passed a very bad night, vomiting frequently. When morning came the rest had improved him to that extent that he felt that he could stand the usual few hours labor that he did for the express company each Sunday morning. The heat was intense and the sun almost produce a sun stroke. Upon his arrival home, he grew worse rapidly, vomiting frequently and then fell into spasm. The seat of his illness was the stomach and the base of the brain. Not until ether had been freely administered did he become quiet, all other medicine failed to product any effect. Monday morning he was feeling comfortable and ere noontime came, he began to fail. At one o'clock p. m. he became unconscious and remained so until his death, which occurred at 9 o'clock p. m. It was not until Monday when the four doctors in attendance conceded that he could not last long, that they gave their consent for his people to be sent for. When the parents and brother arrived the undertaker's rig stood at the door. The funeral was held in the New Salem Reformed church, Wednesday, July 19th at 1 o'clock p. m., Rev. Mr. Hallenbeck of Albany, and H. VanHaagen officiating. Interment in Mount Pleasant Cemetery. He leaves a wife and one child to mourn his loss.
Although he had been in the employ of the American Express Company only a little over three years, yet by his irreproachable character, straightforwardness and piety, he commanded the respect and admiration of his fellow men as was largely demonstrated by their attendance at the house services and by the numerous flowers which they presented.[1]
